Now YOU can transcribe Utah history!

Lauren Katz History, News and Events

Have you ever wondered how records get indexed and pages get transcribed? The truth is, it is a big job and we could use your help!

We are thrilled to announce that we have partnered with an online tool called FromThePage. FromThePage is online software for transcribing documents and collaborating on transcriptions with others. You can transcribe anytime, anywhere! All you need is a computer with internet, the ability to read 19th and 20th century handwriting, and an interest in Utah history.

The first project we need help with is the John D. Lee Case Files. Case files document criminal cases as they proceed through the court system and subsequently become the official files of individual cases. This case file is for the John D. Lee trial concerning his involvement in the 1857 Mountain Meadows Massacre. Lee was convicted and executed in 1877.

Curious about this historical event? You can get some great context from one of our blog posts, one of a few famous trials compiled by a law professor, and a published lecture by Richard E. Turley Jr., an author of Massacre at Mountain Meadows.
